Without a correct understanding of what the Bible says about “works”, it would be very easy to get confused about ones relationship with Jesus. We need to recognize the difference between the passage that some would claim explains that works are necessary to gain salvation and the passages that reveal that works stem from the lives of believers because they are saved. Many legalists point to Philippians 2:12 to “prove” that you and I must do something to get saved. However, the thought continues in the next verse that the believer is working out that which God is working in. God is the One who initiates salvation. Again, these 2 verses say that we don’t work for our salvation; we work out the salvation that God is already working in us.

The justification by grace through faith apart from works will manifest in the works of justification. A “faith” without corresponding works is in truth a non-existent faith. Grace received will produce good works, thus validating one’s faith; but if salvation were possible by works, it would invalidate grace. These works of grace will show themselves in brotherly love and compassion towards others. There will be a progressive life of holiness.

We are not saved by our own works of righteousness, and we can have no confidence at all in a salvation based upon our efforts. But, after experiencing God’s tremendous forgiveness through Jesus Christ, our hearts cry out that the good we do isn’t of ourselves but because Christ lives in us. Our lives are now a “love offering” unto Him because Jesus has provided all that is needed for salvation. Knowing and believing this results in a new way of living.

Jesus has removed the curse of the law and given us the desire to walk in joyful fellowship and loving obedience to Him. While many profess this relationship, their works betray them. True saints, though, will be zealous for good works. The works that are exported from our lives are the product of simply believing in Jesus. Therefore, let us rest in His work, and work until He returns. Don’t reverse the order!
