What power there is in the cross of the Lord Jesus Christ! In His cross there is the power of God unto salvation (Romans 1:16,17). In His cross there is the power of God that enables us to walk in newness of life (Romans 6:4, 7:6).

How different the cross is in the eyes of those who do not know Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 1:18-24)! How different the cross of the Bible is when compared with the modern, “cool”, liberal, painless cross of today’s church!

The cross is where we are crucified to the world and the world is crucified to us (Galatians 6:14). That means that once we are in Christ, the fashions, fads, and trends of this world no longer hold us in their grip. There is only one image that we are concerned with now, and that is being conformed to the image of the Lord Jesus Christ (Romans 8:29; 2 Corinthians 3:18).

So whenever we partake of the bread and the cup in communion, we are to do so remembering the sacrifice that Jesus Christ made on Calvary (1 Corinthians 11.23-25; Hebrews 10:12) to cleanse us from all of our sin and to give us new life.

Another way to conceptualize the cross is found in a single word in the final verse of Galatians 6 – “grace”.
