Matthew 17:3-5 And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him. Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias. While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.

What a remarkable experience this must have been for Peter, James and John. What a lesson for us to learn from this. There are Christians who are of the Moses or Elijah molds. Like Moses, they live according to the letter of the law. They are legalistic and bound by unbiblical religious rules, taboos and regulations. They are always watching you with a readiness to rebuke you if you do not follow their man-made regulations or personal convictions. Then there are those Elijah-like Christians. They are fiery, mystical personalities that are always giving people a word or prophesying to you about this or that.

The moral letter of the Mosaic law is good and important. The gifts of prophecy that are birthed by The Spirit are good and not to be despised. So many of God’s people model their lives after Moses or Elijah. But The Father would say to you and me this morning, beloved, “This is My beloved Son in Whom I am well pleased. Hear Him.” May the example of Jesus, full of grace and truth be in our hearts and set before our eyes today. The Spirit of God has been sent to conform us into the image of Jesus, not Moses, not Elijah. Selah.
