Marriage, as designed by God and revealed in Scripture, is not a power struggle or the ‘Battle of the Sexes.’ The marriage union is a covenant relationship that is entered into by both a man and a woman in the sight of God.
There are distinct role differences in a marriage that are laid out for the purposes of order and function. However, the ideal marriage is one where both the husband and his wife are in love with Jesus more than with each other, both being “born again” and Spirit filled. In that context you will find mutual submission one to another in the fear of God. This means that the wife submits to her husband as unto the Lord, and the husband loves his wife as Christ loves the Church. Both roles require self denial, which Jesus taught.
However, not all Christians are married to believers. That situation is also addressed in Scripture.
I can only obey for myself, and the same holds true for you. So, regardless of the marital state you are in today, your prayer needs to be, ‘Lord Jesus, where I am out of line, change me. Where I am uncertain of my role, show me.’ Then believe that He will do so.
As we hear God speaking to us today from His Word, may we determine to simply submit to God’s wisdom, and leave the results to Him.
