The first Biblical reference to the title of Savior comes from the lips of none other than David (2 Sam 22:3), the man after God’s own heart. The Hebrew word for savior is the verb “yasha”, which means: “avenging, defend, deliver, help, preserve, rescue, save, get victory”. For every believer in any age, that is our God, our Savior! Not military might, not education, not prosperity, not government — nothing and no one else!

Note how Jehovah personalizes this great salvation by declaring, “I am the LORD your God…your Savior” (Isaiah 43:3). Lest we think that there are many ways to God, or multiple saviors, the Lord emphatically declares that He alone is mankind’s Savior, and there is salvation in no other name than the name of Jesus.

The Incarnation is the beautiful story of the birth of our Savior, Christ the Lord. He is the Savior for the entire world, particularly for those who repent and believe His gospel. Because the Savior Jesus is exalted to the right hand of the Father, we are granted forgiveness of sins. The nation of Israel, though now blinded in part, will one day understand that their long-awaited Messiah is Jesus Christ, the Son of David and their Savior.

The Church enjoys an intimate relationship with Christ the Savior for He is our Husband. As we see prophecy being fulfilled in our lifetime we, with great joy and anticipation, look up for our Savior’s return. Our Savior is God Himself, “who desires all men to be saved”! Jesus came to this earth to save sinners, not to destroy men’s lives, nor to condemn mankind. The salvation that Jesus freely offers to all includes deliverance from God’s wrath.
