True repentance is a change of heart that produces a change of action and a change of direction. For example, it’s one thing to say, “I’m sorry.” It’s quite another to say, “I’m sorry. I will stop doing it, and I’m going to live differently now.” This is exactly what the returning exiles did in response to Ezra’s plea, though it was a hard thing for many of them, because it cost them their families.
