This morning we kick off our Christmas Series entitled, “Jesus, The Name above all Names”. Paul the apostle writes to the congregation of saints at Philippi these words: “Wherefore God also hath highly exalted Him, and given Him a name which is above every name: that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father (Philippians 2:9-11). Hebrews tells us that the Name of Jesus is “a more excellent name” than that of any created being (Hebrews 1:4).
As we enter into another “holiday” season, we are once again confronted with the gap that exists between those who celebrate a holiday and those who worship Jesus Christ, The Lamb of God. I do not mean that in a self-righteous, elitist way; I am simply stating the facts. If you were to poll the average Christmas shopper about what Christmas means to them, you would more times than not hear that it is all about celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. They may mention that it’s all about family and giving and being cheerful. All of which are certainly an integral part of Christmas. But may we as evangelical Christians be bold in proclaiming that Jesus Christ was sent into the world to die for our sin, that we, by God’s grace would find forgiveness of sin and deliverance from living a life of sin (John 3:14-20; Titus 2:11-15).
So as we come to The Lord’s table this morning, we want to begin our journey this month by looking unto Jesus, The Author and Finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12:1-2). We want to fix our minds on things eternal (Colossians 3:1,2). We want to remember that the message given to Mary was that she would “bring forth a Son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus: for He shall save His people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:21) May we with reverence and adoration behold The Lamb of God, Jesus Christ, “Who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29) Amen.
