Psalm 61 Hear my cry, O God; attend unto my prayer.  From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.  For thou hast been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from the enemy. I will abide in thy tabernacle for ever: I will trust in the covert of thy wings. Selah.

Jesus told us that in this world, we would face tribulation. David in Psalm 61 is facing such a time in his life. There is no escaping of the consequences of the sin of Adam and Eve. But, there is for the child of God a strength and hope in Christ that enables us to stand firm in the day of trouble. David manifests such a strength and hope here. They are expressed in his “I will” statements in this Psalm. These I will statements mean that regardless of what his circumstances are, David is going to:

(1) Pray. When his heart is overwhelmed, he is going to cry out to God in prayer.
(2) Abide. No matter how he feels, or why he may be feeling like giving up or giving in to the pressure of the situation, he is going to abide in The Vine.
(3) Trust. In spite of what is presently going on around him. In spite of the physical evidence that would suggest to David that his situation is hopeless. David vows to trust in God’s mercy, grace and love for Him.
(4) Worship. In verse 8, David says that part of his fighting the good fight of faith is putting on the  garment of praise and worship.

Ephesians 6 tells us that we need the armor of God of stand in the evil day. If your heart is overwhelmed, pray, abide, trust and worship. God will not only enable you to stand, beloved, He will enable you to walk in the victory of Calvary.
