Just because some Christians have become extremists with the “name-it/claim-it” group doesn’t mean that there isn’t a thread of truth to it. Now I’m not an advocate of “positive confession”, but I am an advocate of Biblical confession. Did you ever notice in the Book of Proverbs all the verses that deal with our speech? Stop right here and look up the following passages: Proverbs 12:18; 13:3; 15:14; 18:20,21; 31:26. This is just a sample of what Scripture has to say about our words.

What you say is important! Our day in “court” will bear this out. I believe “careless confession” is just as devastating as positive confession. The Bible does tell us to watch out for careless talking. Did you know that? Can you see now how practical James 3:1-10 is? We are to “season” our words, and speak to edify one another. Many “whispers” have separated even believers; many “tales” have done spiritual damage. I wonder how many times we allow the “wood” of our words to kindle strife when obedience to the water of God’s Word would have put it out.

Perhaps we all need to pray Psalm 141:3 today: “Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; Keep watch over the door of my lips.” Can we truly pray Psalm 19:14? ó “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart Be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my strength and my Redeemer.” The Father’s heart rejoices when our lips speak right things. May we use our lips to testify for Jesus and declare our faith without wavering. If we live in the Spirit, let’s not only walk in the Spirit, but also talk in the Spirit. May we all yield our tongue unto God as a member to be used for righteousness.

To whom will you yield your tongue? The accuser or the Advocate?
