Hebrews 1:1-3 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners (different times and in different or various ways) spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds (universe); Who being the brightness (radiance) of his glory, and the express image (exact representation) of his person, and upholding (sustaining) all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins (has in His own person purged and provided purification for our sins), sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high.
What an incredible, breathtaking description of The Lord Jesus Christ we are given in these verses this morning! Jesus is ”the brightness of His glory”. The Lord Jesus Christ radiates God’s own glory and expresses the very character of God. So if you want to know what the glory of The Father looks like, behold the person of Jesus as He is portrayed in the gospels because Jesus is the radiance (the streaming out, the effulgence) of the glory of God. Jesus is the express image of His person. The Lord Jesus Christ is the exact character or representation of the Father’s divine nature. The Lord Jesus told Phillip in the upper room, “If you’ve seen me, you’ve seen the father.” (John 14:9)
Jesus made and upholds all things by the word of His power. The Lord Jesus Christ sustains everything and everybody in the universe by the mighty power of His Word. That means that The Lord Jesus Christ is sovereignly and infinitely powerful. The Lord Jesus Christ spoke the entire universe into existence. Not only did He speak everything into existence, He is presently upholding and sustaining all things by His own power. Incredible!! Our Savior Who died for us and is alive, is also The One Who fearfully and wonderfully created you and me in our mother’s womb (Psalm 139:13,14). Jesus is holding you and me and every one of us together right now, and if for one nanosecond He were to stop breathing life into our lungs, we would cease to be. That’s how dependent you and I are on The Lord Jesus Christ this morning. Believe it, beloved. Embrace His control and love for you today. Selah.
Amen!
