The Lord made an unconditional covenant with David concerning his throne. However, the covenant with respect to his descendants was condtional: To be assured of a place on David’s throne, his heirs had to be obedient to God’s law. Jesus was the only Son of David to obey the Lord perfectly, and He will sit on David’s throne forever.
