Jeremiah 2:12,13 Be astonished, O ye heavens, at this, and be horribly afraid, be ye very desolate, saith the Lord. For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken — me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.
Water is often used as a symbol of life because it’s so essential for existence. The Lord speaks to us spiritually when He refers to Himself as the Source of life-giving water. “For with thee is the fountain of life: in thy light shall we see light.” (Psalm 36:9) Because of the lack of water in the area, ancient landowners would dig cisterns to collect the rainwater. To insure that the cistern would hold water, the landowner plastered it inside with lime. Run-off water was gathered but often stagnated. Inevitably, cracks would develop and the water that was sought after to satisfy their thirst would leak out.
Israel had committed two “evils”: they had forsaken YAHWEH, and they had tried to fill that void within with counterfeit pleasures and lusts. Astonishing is the word God uses to describe such a thing, but how often we stagnate spiritually because we seek stale, stagnant water out of the world that leaves us empty, thirsty, and unsatisfied instead of drinking from the Fountain of the water of Life Himself, Jesus Christ. Choose to drink well today, beloved.
John 7:37 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.
John 4:14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.
Revelation 22:17 And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that hearth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.
