Matt 6.25 Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?

The other day when I was out for a bike ride, this thought came into my mind as it related to a part of my exercise routine. The most fit man on the planet 125 years ago is dead and dwelling in eternity somewhere. I really enjoy riding and using that time to talk to The Lord and enjoy His creation. But when I arrived home and recorded my mileage on my calendar, I starting thinking about these words of our Savior in today’s blog. Beloved, contrary to what you may think from past blogs, I am not against physical exercise or trying to eat well. I only have a hard time when it becomes an obsession or subject of conversation equal to or surpassing things of eternal value.

Of course what Jesus was teaching us here is that worry is of no value when it comes to solving any problem or providing any need. Our Father in heaven loves us more than the birds of the air, and the birds in my neck of the woods “chow down!” thanks to God. But this value thought process really began to stir in my heart and mind. Beloved, the real you is more than clothing, food and fitness. They are to be used in moderation, not excess. The challenge that we all face is establishing priorities based on eternal value. To exercise or have a disciplined diet requires planning and sacrifice, doesn’t it? The same holds true in our spiritual life. So, if you are kind of hit and miss with spiritual disciplines, but looking as fit as can be, chances are your priorities and value system are warped. It will not change for the better until you establish eternal values as your priority. Prayer, reading God’s Word, fellowship with other saints, helping those in need and investing in the kingdom are things that will result in eternal value.

So dear ones, next time you are exercising and looking in the mirror to see the pounds disappear and the body lookin’ hot. Make sure you have sought first the kingdom of God and His righteousness. For in 125 years….well, your body won’t look that impressive, and Lord willing, your eternal soul won’t be hot! Purpose to magnify The Lord in all things and in all seasons of life. You are more than food and clothing.
