Psalm 61.1,2 Hear my cry, O God; attend unto my prayer. From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
Notice David writes “When” my heart is overwhelmed, not if. Let me repeat. When my heart is overwhelmed, not if. Beloved, our faith in Christ does not promise us a carefree life. We are imperfect sinners who are perfectly forgiven. We are still clothed with flesh and fractured emotions that can get to the point of overwhelming us. Are you there this morning, beloved?
Please consider that David said that even though he was overwhelmed, he chose to abide in The Lord. In spite of contrary and often contradictory emotions and circumstances, David knew that his only hope was to abide in The Lord. What was true of David is true for you today. Jesus is the God of the overwhelmed. He is our very present help in time of trouble. Do you believe that this morning, dear ones? How vital it is for us to hide that truth in our hearts, because it is at these times that the devil assaults us with condemnation, guilt and lies about God’s love and mercy towards you through His Son, Jesus Christ. Aren’t you glad that we do not need to ignore or deny our feelings? God knows. God cares. God hears your cries.
Our faith in Jesus is not “magic.” Our faith in Jesus is not “mind over matter.” Our faith in Jesus is a faith that is lived in a real world, and real problems, and overwhelming circumstances. So today, if your heart gets overwhelmed, go to The Rock Who is higher than I.
