Proverbs 11.26,26 The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself. He that withholdeth corn, the people shall curse him: but blessing shall be upon the head of him that selleth it.
Being liberal in the bible means to be generous and giving, not greedy and stingy.
God promises that those who are liberal shall be made fat, or blessed. The Psalmist describes the man who fears The Lord this way: He has distributed freely; he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures forever; his horn is exalted in honor. King Solomon wrote, cast your bread upon the waters, for you will find it after many days.
Greed is not gain, beloved. Greed is not Christ-like. Our God is a giving God. He shares His universe with His creation. The apostle Paul told the elders from Ephesus that in all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.” More blessed to give.
More blessed are those who are givers. This is to be the mindset of every child of God. And the giving that I speak of is more than dollars and cents. It is the liberal giving of our time and talents in the service of our King and one another.
Being liberal in Scripture means being like Jesus. Moved with compassion. Open heart and open hands. Always seeking to bless others and build them up in The Lord. No matter what our financial or social status, every single person in the church is to be a giver. Yes, when able to help others out financially, we should do that with simplicity. But every saint can water their brother and sister in Christ with a kind word, a note of thanks, a much needed prayer. Beloved, be a liberal sower of the blessings and grace of God today, and remember, God loveth the cheerful giver!
