In answer to the disciples’ question about signs of the destruction of the Temple (which was fulfilled in 70 AD), and the end of the world, we have what is known as a near and far prophecy. My meditation today is not in particular about those prophecies per se, as much as it is an exhortation to ponder the words of Jesus, “Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come”. But know this, that if the good man of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up.
The meaning is clear. We do not know when Jesus is going to return, but we do know that He tells us to watch. Listen to the full meaning of the Greek word watch. It means to give strict attention to, be cautious, active; to take heed lest through remission and indolence some destructive calamity suddenly overtake one. Vigilance is necessary. The apostle Paul told the saints in Thessalonica, “therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober. For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night.” Peter exhorts us that “the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.” Would you observe beloved that an active part of watching is connected to prayer. Praying saints tend to be watchful saints. In fact, praying is a vital part of the armor of God. Listen to Paul once again; “praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints.”
So beloved, the ability to watch is strengthened by prayer, and according to Colossians 4.2, prayer is strengthened by thanksgiving. Now date- setting for the return of Christ is nonsense. But if the words of Christ mean anything, they tell us to be ready at any moment for His return. That means that I must purpose to pray my way through today. That means that wherever the providence of God leads me vocationally, the singular thing that enables me to guard my heart and be spiritually alert is prayer.
It is prayer that keeps me in communion with God and ready for His return. It is prayer that enables me to resist the fiery darts of temptation and be ready for His return. It is prayer that keeps me looking up, for my redemption is drawing near. Watch and pray beloved, for the thief is on a mission to devour. But rather than be thief conscious, draw near to God, and He will draw near to you. Pray in your day, pray throughout your day. Jesus is coming soon!
Amen!!
Thanks Saint Jeannie! Yes, watch and pray for one another. Be blessed today my dear sister in Christ.
Matthew 25:1-13 – Watch therefore, be ready to meet the bridegroom…
Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom.
2 And five of them were wise, and five were foolish.
3 They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them:
4 But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.
5 While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept.
6 And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him.
7 Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps.
8 And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out.
9 But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves.
10 And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut.
11 Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us.
12 But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not.
13 Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.
