Psalm 133:1-3 A Song of Ascents. Of David. Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity! It is like the precious oil on the head, running down on the beard, on the beard of Aaron, running down on the collar of his robes! It is like the dew of Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion! For there the LORD has commanded the blessing, life forevermore.
Satan is no fool. In fact, he is more clever and cunning than the brightest theologians around. Even Satan knows that gospel centered unity among the people of God is the place where God commands His blessing. Thus, division and dissension are inevitable sources of quenching of The Spirit. God blesses unity. Christian unity does not mean full agreement in everything. There are even different shades of each denomination. What are we to be united in? The Person of Jesus Christ and the gospel of salvation by grace alone, through faith alone in Christ alone.
Jesus prayed for this unity in John 17. Paul exhorted the Ephesians to endeavor to keep the unity of The Spirit in the bond of peace. He who sows discord among the brethren is an abomination in the eyes of The Lord. Is the practical expression of your faith in Jesus such that promotes the kind of unity that “commands” the blessing of God? Or such that Is divisive and is an abomination is His sight? I suggest to you this morning that the lyrics of the song of the redeemed in heaven in Revelation 5 reveals the “thing” that binds us together. For Thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation.
