Matthew 5.6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
The Beatitudes are descriptions of those God-developed character and values that are the secret of a blessed or happy life. Every single person is looking for happiness, and Jesus Christ describes for us the source of true happiness. It should be noted here that Jesus does not tell us to hunger and thirst after blessedness or happiness, but that is exactly what most people do. According to Jesus, blessedness or happiness is always something that is the result of seeking something else. Whenever you put happiness before righteousness, you will always be doomed for misery. You and I can never make ourselves with righteousness before God no matter how hard we try, and self-fulfillment is a delusion.
Man’s greatest need can only be met by having a hunger for God Himself, because only God Himself can satisfy what has been called, “the hole or emptiness” in our souls which is a result of the fall. Satan’s agenda is to cause you fill a legitimate need from God in an illegitimate way. He will offer religion and good works instead of salvation by grace through faith in the finished work of Christ. He will offer extramarital sex as a means of fulfillment instead of sex within the bonds of marriage. He will offer gambling or income through sinful ways as opposed to income through hard work. But none of these things satisfy the soul. Beware of accepting the momentary substitutes of the enemy for the soul satisfying pleasures of God.
