1 Samuel 18.9-11 And Saul eyed David from that day and forward.
And it came to pass on the morrow, that the evil spirit from God came upon Saul, and he prophesied in the midst of the house: and David played with his hand, as at other times: and there was a javelin in Saul’s hand. And Saul cast the javelin; for he said, I will smite David even to the wall with it. And David avoided out of his presence twice.
Among the works of the flesh in Galatians 5 is envyings. Even a cursory glance at the other works that are found in this list tells you that envy is not good. Envy and it’s Siamese twin jealousy are destructive and Spirit quenching. Envy and jealousy destroy relationships more than alcohol and drugs. Envy and jealousy cannot stand to hear the praises or good reports given unto others that we think we deserve. Envy and jealousy is the root cause of church fights and splits. “From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?” Dearly beloved, each and every one of us must abort every and any form of envy and jealousy from manifesting in our lives.
The “javelin” that Satan uses to manifest envy is backbiting, gossip and slander. Once you release that envy or jealousy towards another saint, the powers of darkness begin their work to kill, steal and destroy that person. Are you envious this morning of another person? What they have? The calling of God on their life? Their marriage? Their well adjusted family or children? Their financial prosperity? Their looks? Their success?
How can I tell if I am envious? You twinge when you hear their name. You avoid them at all costs. And here is the rub. You begin to see them as your enemy, thus, your mission now is to destroy them. But let me give you some much needed advice this morning. The fiery dart of envy and jealousy that you hurl at others will end up killing you. The spiritual poison of bitterness will eat away at you. If that is you this morning, acknowledge that sin before it is too late. Allow God to cleanse you from within and remove that evil cancer from your life. Saul’s envy of David ended up killing him.
