Romans 8.20,21 For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope, Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.
Ecclesiastes 3.11 Yet God has made everything beautiful for its own time. He has planted eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God’s work from beginning to end.(NLT)
Why was man created? To have fellowship with God. To enjoy God. What disrupted that original design? Sin. But the original purpose of why man was created was not destroyed. It was buried in our trespasses and sins. Thus, our existence on earth is now one of seeking that place of hope, peace and rest that was once only found in God alone.
The literal rendering of Eccl 3.11 reads that God has placed eternity in our hearts. Paul in Romans tells us that we are made subject to vanity. So what do we do to fill that huge hole in our souls? Enter the God of this world, the devil. All the kingdoms of this world and the glory of them are now at our disposal. His advertising agency tells us that if you could have this car, thus house, this guy or this girl, your life will now be complete. But dear ones, the gospel of Jesus Christ tells us that we can only be complete in Jesus.
The battle for fulfillment rages doesn’t it? The battle for acceptance and pleasure. We MUST fill that void. But here is the glorious hope of the gospel. As we set our affections on things above, not seeking to find fulfillment in or with the things of this world, we “discover” that our satisfaction lies in The One Who is set at the right hand of The Father, Jesus Christ. Does that mean that there is no satisfaction or fulfillment in any relationship on earth, or in any area of achievement or success? Absolutely not, if your FIRST love is Jesus Christ and your desire is to live for His glory. God made us subject to vanity in order that we would only find ultimate satisfaction and fulfillment in Him. Beloved, don’t accept a cheap substitute for Jesus. Don’t believe the lie that a soda or beer or trophy will satisfy you. The Only One that can satisfy the unsatisfiable me and you, my dear reader, is The Lord Jesus Christ.
Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at Thy right hand, there are pleasures forevermore! Glory to God! Only The Eternal One can satisfy that eternal hole in your heart.
