These first four verses of Colossians chapter 3 are a transitional text, a bridge text connecting the front of the book with the back of the book. Paul does this quite frequently in his epistles: after writing about Christology, Doctrine of Christ, Sin, Salvation, Supremacy, the person and work of Jesus Christ, he now transitions into Application – Our Identity.
This passage speaks to one of life’s biggest questions: God, what should I do with my life?
Why is it so difficult to find out God’s will for my life? Is God disinterested? Should I conclude that His plan is a mystery?
No. God’s Will for me is pretty simple, and repeated often throughout the Bible:
- Repent
- Salvation
- Rejoice
- Give Thanks
- Don’t Covet
But what about specific decisions that we have to make? Important questions like, what God wants me to do with my life? What is His plan for my life? What is His will for my life?
- What college do I go to?
- Who should I marry?
- Where should I live?
- Should I buy this or not?
Can we really find answers to these questions? Where do I begin?
The answer is – lift up your head and look up! See who Jesus is and where He is seated at the right hand of God!
Then, instead of asking yourself, What should I do with my life? Ask, what should I do with the life that God has put within me?
