1 Corinthians 1:29-31 That no flesh should glory in his presence. But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption: That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.
Biblical salvation is God’s work from start to finish. It is a gift from God, not of works lest any man should boast (Ephesians 2:8-9). Our reading from 1 Corinthians this morning shatters any works-based or ritual-based redemption. If there was any inherent saving value within us, then Jesus Christ did not need to shed His blood on the cross. If mankind were able to redeem itself, then we would have something to boast of before God. But salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone. No flesh can glory in His presence.
When we observe The Lord’s Supper together there is no saving grace in the bread and the cup themselves. Like eyeglasses, they enable us to “see” the beauty and majesty of our glorious Redeemer’s sacrifice for sinners. The Lord’s Supper magnifies the grace of God. It exalts the fact that it is of Him that we are in Christ Jesus, Who was made unto us His wisdom, righteousness, sanctification and redemption.
Reader, set your eyes upon Jesus this morning. See Him dying there on that cross for your sin. Repent and believe the gospel and you shall be saved. Selah.
