The Pharisees and Herodians disliked each other, but they hated Jesus more. They tried to trap Jesus by asking Him about paying taxes to Rome. They believed that any answer that He gave would cause Him to be either rejected by the people or to be arrested by Rome. After Jesus answered, neither of these things happened, and His enemies marveled.
