Jesus declared that the righteousness of His followers had to exceed the righteousness of the scribes and the Pharisees, or they would “by no means” enter the kingdom of heaven. Those words must have shocked His listeners, because the common person could not imagine anyone that was more righteous than a scribe or a Pharisee. Jesus meant that His true disciples would possess a deeper, more radical righteousness than that of the Pharisees.
