Contrary to worldly philosophies that advocate for strong independence and self reliance, it is the poor in spirit, not the proud in spirit, not the self sufficient, not those with good self esteem that are the spiritually prosperous. Our Lord’s opening words in the Sermon on the Mount were not, “Blessed are the rich in substance,” but,“Blessed are the poor in spirit.” Please open your Bible to Matthew chapter five, verse three, and listen as Pastor Ray Viola begins his discussion of the Sermon on the Mount while also preparing his congregation to take the Lord’s Supper.
