It seems almost impossible to believe that a person can have God appear to him two different times, given wisdom and understanding and still end up turning away from God. Actually, the reason is simple, and that is that wisdom apart from obedience to God’s written word equals vanity.

Pardon the expression, but because Solomon disobeyed God’s word, he became a “wise old fool.” God said that the king was not to multiply unto himself horses, silver, gold, or wives; but he disobeyed. This compromise caused him to pursue security in the world and satisfaction in worldly pleasures.

The moral of the story? There is no life under the sun apart from abiding in the Son. “Can a man take fire to his bosom, and his clothes be not burned?” In other words, does adultery or sexual sin pay? Yes! Death! Can a Christian deliberately attempt to defy “It is written” and not get burned? No.

May the Holy Spirit put a fresh fire of obedience into our hearts, to the end that we would be obedient children, not being conformed to this world, but into the image of Jesus Christ. Wisdom in the head is pride; wisdom in the heart is purity.
