The Apostle Paul wrote about the value that fasting has in connection with marriage in 1 Cor 7:5.

Question: When was the last time that you fasted for your marriage?
Another question: Are any of our marriages so perfect that we can toss aside the Holy Spirit’s admonition in the verse just quoted?

As we look at the topic of fasting this morning, it dawned on me more and more how relevant this topic is to marriage, family, and home life. Now, do not get the idea that the primary reason to fast is so God may reveal to you your spouse’s faults (which may or may not happen). The primary reason for fasting is to humble and chasten your soul before the Lord. Fasting is a way to shut down our bodily appetites in favor of seeking spiritual refreshment and intimacy with Jesus.

Face it, we all need the wisdom, strength, and help from the Lord in our homes. Even if God’s grace has blessed our marriage and family, there is always room for improvement. So, as we examine the Biblical benefits of fasting, let’s seek to apply this ‘secret weapon’ of God to our home and our church family. The rewards will be tremendous.
